Beyond bauma: SE10’s unofficial guide to Munich

From iconic beer gardens to cultural gems, discover SE10’s tips for unwinding in Munich after a busy day at bauma, the world’s largest construction exhibition.

bauma 2025 is just around the corner and while you’re busy finalising your participation, don’t forget to build in some time, if you can, to experience what Munich has to offer beyond the exhibition halls. It truly is a beautiful city, brimming with history, culture, and delicious food! Over the years, SE10 has supported many construction PR clients at bauma, and while we’ve been there, we’ve also discovered some great ways to unwind after a busy day at the show. Here are some of our top recommendations for exploring the Bavarian capital in your free time.

Eat and drink your way around the city

Trade fairs are hard work, and there’s no better place to refuel than Munich! Our team’s favourite spots include:

  • Dallmayr – This iconic 300-year-old delicatessen is a foodie paradise!
  • Viktualienmarkt – Grab a Schnitzelsemmel (an escalope roll), the perfect portable snack for strolling around the fruit and vegetable stalls.
  • Hofbräuhaus – Yes, the legendary Bierkeller is touristy, but the atmosphere is electric and you’ve got to try the traditional Schweinshaxe (pigs knuckles) or Weisswurst (Munich’s famous white sausage). Pro tip: brush up on your Bavarian cheers – Prost!
  • Chinesischer Turm beer garden – If the weather is good, head to the Englischer Garten and enjoy a beer at this iconic Biergarten.
  • L’Osteria Künstlerhaus – If you fancy Italian, this restaurant offers gigantic pizzas in a historic building. Usually, half a pizza is plenty! Seriously, these things are huge.
  • Rischart – Treat yourself to a Krapfen (a German doughnut) at one of Munich’s best bakeries. You deserve it after all that bauma networking!

Get some fresh air

If you haven’t walked enough at bauma (and let’s face it, you probably have) Munich offers plenty of scenic spots to stretch your legs:

  • Stroll (or run) along the Isar River – A peaceful way to see the city and clear your head after a long day at the Messe München.
  • Explore the Englischer Garten – One of Europe’s largest urban parks and perfect for a relaxing stroll, unless you accidentally stumble on the nudist area. Consider yourself warned!
  • Watch the surfers at the Eisbachwelle – This famous river wave in the Englischer Garten is a surprising sight in the city centre! These guys are seriously skilled.

From cranes to cars (and maybe some football)

Munich showcases so much more than construction equipment.

  • BMW museum – If you’ve spent the day discussing heavy machinery, why not switch gears (literally) at the BMW museum? Whether you’re a petrolhead or not, this place is cool.
  • Deutsches Museum Verkehrszentrum (German Transport Museum) – If you’re still fascinated by all things that move, this museum is also worth a visit.
  • Allianz Arena – Catching a game here is an experience. The way the stadium lights up at night – red for Bayern Munich or blue for 1860 – is a sight to behold!

History, art, and a touch of royalty

Munich’s rich cultural heritage is reflected in its stunning architecture and world-class museums.

  • Residenz Museum – Explore the opulent former royal palace of Bavarian monarchs.
  • Bayerische Staatsoper (Bavarian State Opera) – Even if you’re not an opera buff, the building itself is beautiful!
  • Schloss Nymphenburg – A short tram ride away, this stunning palace and garden is reminiscent of Versailles.
  • Pinakothek Museums – Art lovers can explore Munich’s renowned galleries, many of which offer €1 entry on Sundays.
